Hemiacetal forms in acidic condition. Its an intermediate between transformation of aldehyde or ketone to an acetal in acidic medium by reacting with an alcohol

During formation of acetal some conditions are to be followed i.e. it must be done with an acid catalyst because the alcohol is a weak nucleophile and secondly water must be removed which forms during formation of acetal
