Explain how normal breathing occurs and how it is related to pressure and volume in the chest cavity ?

  • Pressure and volume of the chest have relation to the process of inhalation. This relationship is based on the Boyle’s law.
  • During normal inhalation, contraction of diaphragm and muscles which connected to the rib cage are takes place due to the inspiration of oxygen. Which leads to the volume expansion in thoracic cavity (chest) as well as the lung.
  • So that the pressure in both lung and chest will be reduced or decreases due to the increased volume of oxygen.
  • Principle of boyle’s low proposing that, gas with a constant temperature has decreased pressure when increase in volume and vice versa.
  • Like wise, During exhalation the pressure of chest and lung increases where volume decreases.
