How are transcription and the replication of novel coronavirus related?

See what you can find out about the genome of the virus and relate it to the processes we have discussed: replication of DNA, and transcription into RNA. The virus has a biology quite different from ours where we pass on genetic information by copying DNA (S phase), and dividing it (mitosis or meiosis). Since viruses make use of the hosts machinery, this difference makes their reproduction more tricky. As a class, can we figure this out?

Answer #1

coronavirus are family of enveloped, plus stranded RNA virus with helical nucleocapsids and extraordinarily large genomes. The hallmark of coronavirus transcription is production of multiple subgeomic mRNA that contain sequences corresponding to both ends of genome.

TRANSCRIPTION is defined as a process whereby subgenome sized RNA are produced. And REPLICATION is the process whereby genome sized RNA which also function as mRNA is produced.

A virus has either DNA or RNA genes and is also called DNA/RNA virus.the vast majority of virus have RNA genomes. The type of nucleic acids is irrelevant to the shape of the genome.A viral genome irrespective of nucleic acid type, is almost always eithersingle stranded or double stranded.

Viral genomes are circular,as in polyoma virus or linear as in adnovirus. For most viruses with RNA genomes and some with SSDNA genomes, the single strands are said to be positive sense or negative sense depending on if they are complementary to viral M-RNA.

    8) The Replication of Coronavirus is depicted in Figure 1 (See below). As you can see in Comment 2, it is not clear whether the virus gets into the host cell by FUSION or RECEPTOR-MEDIATED ENDOCYTOSIS. Please define & describe the entry of a virus by FUSION and by RECEPTOR-MEDIATED ENDOCYTOSIS. How could a Coronavirus enter a cell? Which mechanism do YOU THINK is most likely correct? Why?
