What role does SOD have on the results in Figure 1. ?
RESULTS NBT. As shown in Fig. 1 GO plus glucose do indeed cause the reduction of NBT (line 1) and 10 ug/ml of SOD did substantially inhibit (line 2). If NBT reduction were dependent upon 02, made by the enzyme, then the reaction should be O, dependent. Yet the progress curves (lines 1 and 2) show acceleration with time which might be due to Oz depletion. In accord with that interpretation, the rate of NBT reduction was much faster, and was linear, under anaerobic conditions (line 3). In order to allow more precise measurement of the rate anaerobic NBT reduction, the concentration of GO was decreased from 0.25 to 0.038 mg/ml (line 4). From the figure, it is clear that SOD is decreasing the reduction rate. As the SOD is available there was decrease in absorbance as compared to the reduction bt NBT
