Deficient intake of folic acid is responsible to impair the maturation of young red blood cells which causes anemia. Glycine is one of the two required precursors for heme synthesis. THF is a required substrate for serine / glycine hydroxymethyltransferase. Folic acid is required for THF synthesis. This is the metabolic relationship between hemoglobin synthesis and folic acid deficiency.
