Answer #1

CF is an autosomal recessive disease. Let us consider CF allele to be (c). So the disease would occur only if a person has genotype (cc). Test show that Lei is a carrier, i.e she must be heterozygous for the disease having Cc while Robert is not a carrier and does not have the disease. So Robert has CC

Male/Female C C
C CC (normal) CC(normal)
c Cc(normal carrier) Cc (normal carrier)

a. The Puneet square reveals that there is no chance of Lei and Robert's child having CF but the child has 50% chance of having CF.

b. The child has a 50% chance to be a carrier of CF or to not have CF allele at all. Even if the child is a carrier, there will be no manifestation of the disease and the child would be phenotypically normal.

Mendelian Genetics The gene involved in the disease Sickle Cell Anemia (SCA) is on human chromosome 11. Allele “A” is the normal form of the gene and codes for a part of the protein complex called hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is required for your blood cells to carry oxygen. Allele “a” is an abnormal form of the gene. The hemoglobin protein made from the “a” allele is defective. Red blood cells containing the defective protein are very fragile. This disease is recessive–meaning...
