Hydrochloride acid (HCl) is formed in the stomach by combining hydrogen and chloride, an ion of chlorine. HCl is predominantly utilized in the early stages of digestion. It helps by breaking down proteins for digestion and kills any unwanted bacteria present in the stomach.
