the function of proteins solely depends on the structure of the proteins and the structure of the protein is defined by the R-group of amino acids. R groups determine the shape of the molecule by affecting the interaction between the peptide chains and amino acids. R groups are not part of a peptide bond and are free, allowing the amino acids to interacts with each other. This interaction could be hydrophobic interaction, electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding or disulphide bond. These bonds provide a unique shape and structure to the protein suitable for the specific function.
