Many species are known to form search images, whereby they become good at spotting prey which they encounter often. Imagine that a species of mantis is preying on another species of insect that has two colour morphs of yellow and pink, and that pink is more numerous, but both colours are equally conspicuous. The colour morph is genetically determined. The life cycle of our mantis is that each spring, individuals are born; they then forage, mate and lay their eggs towards the end of the summer; the adults then die.
