Question: What is the effect of increasing salt concentrations on the rate of osmosis in potato cells?

Hypothesis: Osmosis is a process by which the solvent molecules tend to pass through a semi-permeable membrane from a solution of low conecntration to high concentration. All cells are surrounded by a plasma membrane, which is semi-permeable in nature. So if cells are placed in solvents with increasing concentration of salt/solute, then the solvent (water) will traverse from inside of the cell to the external solution. This will lead to a decrease in the weight of the potato cubes, after a given time gap.  

Dependent Variable Weight of the potato cubes before and after immersion. Osmosis will take place in the potato cells, when they are placed in solutions of varying salt concentartions.As a result of water traversing out of the cell, across the semi-permeable cell membrane, the weight of the potato cubes is expected to decrease. Hence this parameter was chosen as dependent variable. The initial weight has therefore been asked to be recorded
Independent Variable Time of immersion in solution Time is the chosen parameter here, as it can be varied across different replicates of the experiment, but has to be kept constant across each treatment(salt concentration) per experiment.
Controlled Variables

1. Salt Concentration

2. Weight of each potato cube to the nearest 0.1 g

3. Level of solution in beaker after immersing potato cubes, such that it is enough to cover the potatoes

All these 3 variables, need to be controlled, such that a minimum parity is maintained across the different treatments (salt concentration) of the experiment and also to minimalise error.

Control group : Potato cube immersed in 0% salt (deionised water). Considering the salt concentration inside the cell is higher than in the solvent kept in the beaker (0% salt), water will traverse across the semi-permeable membrane from outside the solvent to the inside of the cell. This will lead the potato cubes to expand in size, associated with an increse of weight.

Experimental group : Potato cube immersed in varying salt concentrations (1%, 5% and 10%). Since the salt concentration of the solvent in the beaker is higher than the inside of the cells, water will traverse from inside of the potato cells to the external solution, causing them to shrink, associated with a decrease in weight of the potato cubes.

Conclusion: supported the hypothesis (although NO data of observation of the experiment is provided)
