In a hypothetical study of a new drug called Xastin, researchers found that Xastin
reduced childblains by 10%, rejecting the null hypothesis of no effect (P = 0.04). The
older drug, Zastin showed no statistically significant effect; that is, the null hypothesis of
no effect could not be rejected. The researchers concluded that Xastin was better than
Zastin. Was this a valid conclusion? Explain.

Answer #1

The null hypothesis means there is no such significant difference between the experiment and the control population. The difference that we are getting is mainly because of experimental errors and other variables. So for a significant result, the null hypothesis should be rejected.

For Zastin, the null hypothesis could not be rejected that means the difference in the control and experimental sets may be due to experimental/sampling errors.

For Xastin, the null hypothesis can be rejected and the difference of 10% is significant between control and experimental sets. So Xastin is better than Zastin.

A statistically significant difference was reported between the responses of the two groups with p-value < 0.005. What is the best conclusion? A. There is little evidence that the treatment has any effect. B. Here is strong evidence that the treatment is effective. C. Using a 5% significance level, we can conclude that the treatment was not effective,...

One group received the new drug; the other group received a placebo. The difference in mean subsequent survival (those with drugs - those without drugs) was found to be 1.04 years and a 95% confidence interval was found to be 1.04 ± 2.37 years. The Acme Drug Company develops a new drug, designed to prevent colds. The company states that the drug is more effective for women than for men. To test this claim, they choose a simple random sample of 100 women and 200 men from a population of 100,000 volunteers.
