r represents the correlation coefficient between two variables. Its value ranges from -1 to +1. If the value is 0, it means that there is no correlation between the variables. If r is positive, it means there is direct correlation between the variables i.e if one becomes larger, the other also gets larger. r is negative if there is inverse correlation between the variables, i.e if one gets larger another gets smaller. The value of r is close to -1 or +1 when they are strongly correlated. Here, as the correlation coefficent is -0.7, i.e close to -1, we could say the variables are closely related. If r value was near -0.5 we would have said the variables are moderately correlated.
