Answer #1

This is a diagram of the lac operon.

Top diagram shows repressed state and bottom diagram shows active state.

1 is RNA polymerase
2 is Repressor
3 is Promoter
4 is Operator
5 is Lactose
6 is lacZ
7 is lacY
8 is lacA

lacZ codes for β-galactosidase gene

lacY codes for Beta-galactoside permease

lacA codes for Galactoside acetyltransferase.

How it works:

Top diagram shows repressed state

Lac repressor is not expressed as inducer like lactose cannot binds binds to it. Therefore, lac repressor is not active and RNA polymerase cannot bind to promoter and as repressor binds to operator.

Bottom diagram shows active state.

Lac repressor is expressed when inducer like lactose binds to it.

Lac operon is expressed only when lactose is present. In presence of lactose it acts as inducer and binds to repressor so that repressor do not binds to operator. Now, it allows RNA polymerase to bind to promoter and catalyse the synthesis of beta-galactosidase gene.
