Answer #1

Ans. 69. The channel proteins allow diffusion of ions along these channels down the concentration gradient. The cell membrane is a semi permeable membrane, and so it does not allow every kind of molecule to pass through it. It is made up of lipid bilayer. The portion of the channel in contact with the lipid bilayer is made up of hydrophobic amino acids while the portion of the channel forming the pore, is made up of hydrophilic amino acids as shown in the diagram.

Therefore, the statement in option c is false.

Which of the following statement(s) regarding gated channels is/are FALSE? Gated channels facilitate the passage of ions such as Cl- and Na+ across the plasma membrane. Gated channels open or close in response to a signal. Gated channels facilitate the passage of small, nonpolar molecules such as O2 across the plasma membrane. Gated channels allow for the passive movement of substances across the plasma membrane in a process called facilitated diffusion. Gated channels facilitate the passage of small, nonpolar molecules...

Let’s consider an electrical current through a single ion channel, as shown in the following figure. We start by treating an ion channel as a cylindrical pore through the cell membrane. The channel is of length L ≈ 5 nm and is filled with water. The concentration difference of Na+ ions across the channel is Δc ≈ 100 mM. This concentration difference produces a flux of ions through the channel given by DΔc/L, where D is the diffusion constant for...

Please summarize this chapter typed clearly. Diffusion Is a passive process of transport. A single substance tends to move from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration until the concentration is equal across a space. Facilitated transport Facilitated diffusion is the process of spontaneous passive transport of molecules or ions across a biological membrane via specific transmembrane integral proteins. Channels The integral proteins involved in facilitated transport are collectively referred to as transport proteins, and they...
