Create a labeled diagram and describe the gene transfer process by which the Shiga toxin gene was picked up fromShigella dysenteriae and transferred to Escherichia coli. The process as was follws:

  • First the Shiga toxin gene is obtained from the bacterium Shigella dysenteriae.
  • On the other hand, a bacteriophage H-19B (which are viruses capable of infecting bacteria) was used, extraction of the bacteriophage DNA was done and hydrolyzed with restriction enzymes (the HindII enzymes).
  • Hydrolyzed bacteriophage DNA + Shiga toxin gene + ligases were used to construct a plasmid.
  • The plasmid was added to a medium that already had E. coli bacteria.
  • The temperature and energy source conditions were provided for E. coli to grow and Shiga toxin expression was finally obtained.
