The tropical, or Torrid Zone, lies near the Equator and extends to the Tropic of Cancer in the north and the Tropic of Capricorn in the south. Tropical regions occur between the Tropic of Cancer at 23.5 degrees north and the Tropic of Capricorn at 23.5 degrees south of the equator. Many researchers have hypothesized that climatic factors somehow cause species to originate more quickly in tropical regions.
