This is relevant to aerobic energy metabolism because in at least some type of cells LACTATE accumulate during period of hypoxia (Low oxygen concentration) and must be reoxydised to PYRUVATE when oxygen concentration rises. The above calculations tell us that the reoxidation would not be possible under Cellular conditions, but under Standard conditions, the ratios of lactate to pyruvate and NAD to NADH must be sufficiently high to render the reaction EXERGONIC.
