Answer #1

Ans. ∆p = ∆\psi - (0.059V)∆pH

Here, ∆p denotes the proton motive force

\psi denotes difference in charge across membrane in volts

∆pH denotes the difference in pH

∆p = 0.20 - (0.059)*0.75

= 0.15575V

In the liver mitochondria, the membrane potential is -0.17 V (negative inside). The pH difference is -0.5 (pHoutside – pHinside). The charge on a proton is (+1). What is the proton motive force (the amount of energy stored in the gradient)? The Gibbs free energy for the gradient is [96485 X -.17] + [2.303 X 8. 315 X 310 X -0.5] = -19.4 kJ/mol. Please explain the formula and what is the question asking for, Thank you.

PLEASE ANSWER ALL PARTS. THANK YOU! 11. (13 pts) Electron transfer Electron transfer translocates protons from the mitochondrial matrix to the external medium, establishing a pH gradient across the inner membrane (outside more acidic than inside). The tendency of protons to diffuse back into the matrix is the driving force for ATP synthesis by ATP synthase. During oxidative phosphorylation by a suspension of mitochondria in a medium of pH 6.9, the pH of the matrix has been measured as 7.7....
