Answer #1

Q1) Species 1 will win for any startingvalues of N1 and N2.

In the graph isocline for species 1 is above and over the isocline of species 2. as the isolcines are decreasing which means both the species are decreasing over a period of time. as the isocline of species 2 lies left to isocline of species 1, species 2 will become extinct while speices 1 will reach the carrying capapcity. therfore species 1 will outcompete species 2.

Q2) Interspecific competition will be severe when species share identical resource requirements.

A native species of earthworm (species 1) has an Imax of 0.5, and a carrying capacity of 50 worms per square meter of soil. An invasive introduced earthworm species (species 2) has an I'max of 0.0, and a carrying capacity of 100 (per square meter). The niches of these two earthworms overlap to some degree, such that a2i = 0.8 and a2 = 0.6. Competitive interactions can occur within species (intraspecific competition) or between species (interspecific competition). These interactions are often intense, but intensity is virtually always a part of one of the two types of competition. Which of the following helps explain this observation? Multiple Choice Interspecific competition is usually intense because different species cannot partition resources when resource requirements overlap Introspecific competition is usually intense because individuals have nearly identical resource requirements Interspecific competition is usually intense because it may involve predator/prey...
