Answer #1

Naïve T cells are precursors for effector and memory T cells (sunsets). They are small cells with little cytoplasm and they express surface markers, such as CD28, CD40 etc. They have low metabolism and they are unable to produce proinflammatory cytokines. They migrate within the secondary lymphoid organs, where they interact with dendritic cells.

Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen-presenting cells of the mammalian immune system.

Function of DCs - To process and present antigen material on the cell surface to the T cells. They act as messengers between the innate and the adaptive immune systems. They produces interleukins.

Upon activation, dendritic cells acquire mature APC function and migrate to lymphoid tissues, where they efficiently activate antigen-specific T helper cells via MHC class II peptide and express costimulatory molecules, including CD80/86. DC-derived IL-12 drives Th1 responses. If no IL-12 being secreted, they follow Th2 response.
