Coding DNA is the part of DNA that codes for proteins. This constituents around 2% of the total DNA and the remaining 98% is the non-coding DNA, which do not code for any protein and is often referred to as "junk" DNA. However, some part of this non-coding DNA is important for the proper functioning of the cell.

Four types of non-coding DNA are:-

1.) The repeated non-coding DNA at the ends of chromosomes that forms the telomere and protect the ends of chromosomes.

2.) Regulatory elements like promoters,enhancers etc, which control the expression of various genes by regulating transcription.

3.) Introns :- these are non-coding part of genes that are removed prior to protein formation by the process of splicing. These regions can have regulatory elements like enhancers.

4.) Coding to various RNAs like tRNA(transfer RNA), rRNA (ribosomal RNA), microRNA etc which play different roles in the transcription and translation in a cell.
