What are 10 possible chemotaxis experiments using Tetrahymena other than chemotaxis assay, observing number of vacuoles at varying time increments, and studying the contraction rate of vacuoles in different solutions? Also what does the contraction rate of cell vacuoles show in relation to chemorepellents and attractants?
Chemotaxis experiments with Tetrahymena
Chemotaxis — that is oriented locomotion of single cells — was shown by motion analysis of Tetrahymena thermophila.
1. You could compare chemotaxis of cells for their growth media vs. H2O.
2. You could compare starved cells to non-starved cells for chemotaxis to various substances (sugars, amino acids, etc.)
3. You could try and find out what components in the growth media cause chemotaxis (see growth media recipe)
4. Look in the literature for chemotactic substances. Try them with, starved and non-starved cells. There are lots of cool studies in the literature.
5. Look for molecules that may interfere with chemotaxis (organic molecules, cytoskeleton inhibitors, pollutants, herbicides etc.)
6. See in chemotaxis is pH dependent.
7. See if chemotaxis is temperature dependent.
8. Try Ca2+ channel inhibitors and/or K+ channel inhibitors.
9. Effect of Oxytocin and its Analogues on the Chemotaxis of Tetrahymena.
10. To study Effects of hormones on chemotaxis in Tetrahymena.
Chemotaxis by moving cells can be analyzed using a two-chamber capillary assay. In the capillary assay, an outer chamber contains mobile cells while an inner chamber contains a chemical to be tested. If the chemical being tested is a chemoattractant, the cells will migrate into the inner chamber. If it is a chemorepellent, the cells will remain in the outer chamber. The number of cells within the inner chamber after 10-60 minutes can be used to determine whether the chemical is stimulating positive or negative chemotaxis.

11. Ovalbumin (Ova) is the predominant protein in egg white (of chickens and other birds), and has long been a model antigen in immunological studies (initially because of its easy availability, and then later, because sometimes it is easier to study new things about an existing protein than to start from scratch using an uncharacterized reagent). Originally, it was used to study antibody generation (eg by injecting it into mice). However, it has also been used to study MHC-based antigen...
Question 12 parts a,b,c Q12. Using the information provided below on ELISA, answer the following questions system to recognize an infectious and in Background While antibodies are used by the immune system to recognize scientists also use antibodies for a myriad of laboratory and the body, scientists also use antibodies for a agent in assays. If a scientist aims to identify a specific protein or mal y and clinical heterogeneous mixture such as a cell lysate or blood e such...
III. ASSIGNMENT 2.1 As discussed in class, the example program enumerates all possible strings (or if we interpret as numbers, numbers) of base-b and a given length, say l. The number of strings enumerated is b l . Now if we interpret the outputs as strings, or lists, rather than base-b numbers and decide that we only want to enumerate those strings that have unique members, the number of possible strings reduces from b l to b!. Furthermore, consider a...
Title: Development of an Adhesion Assay and Characterization of an Adhesion-Deficient Mutant of Pseudomonas fluorescens RESULTS Bacterial adhesion to sand columns. In the initial column assays with soil-and-sand mixtures, P. fluorescens PfO-1 and E. coli SLH25 had the highest and lowest adhesion values, respectively. Therefore, the sand column assay was optimized to yield the greatest difference in percent adhesion for these two strains. PfO-1 bacteria grown in minimal medium to the logarithmic phase were washed and suspended in either minimal...
Western Components, Inc. manufactures a variety of pinions, gears and other component parts used by companies around the world. Their major customer is a large west-coast aircraft manufacturer. Currently, Western has substantial unused capacity due to a downturn in production for this major customer. This in turn has caused a significant drop in profits at Western since their workers are highly skilled and Western does not want to reduce head-count during this downturn which they expect to be temporary. Sally...
just one example/demonstration! Data needed to be calculated is in highlighted in green boxes. And I highlighted in red an equation (not sure if thats what you use to calculate it) And ignore the lab instructions on completeing a graph!! I already know how to do that in excel, just curious how Ln (relative rate) and 1/T in K^-1 is calculated by hand* here is the rest of that lab leading up to the question as I know its typically...
Write solutions legibly, and show all work. Walk the reader through your thought process, using English words when necessary. 1. Recall question 2 of the previous homework – We draw 6 cards from a 52 card deck and let X = the number of heart cards drawn. You already found the pmf back then. You’re allowed to use it here without re-deriving it. a. What is the expected value of X? b. What is the variance of X? What is...
