Above given is a reaction of phenolphthalein with water and NAOH. water have neutarl pH and NAOH is basic in nature (pH more than 7)

In the reaction water and phenophthalein solution is kept in a bag and it show no colour because phenophthalein give no colour in neutral pH.

When bag is kept in beaker containing NAOH,  Aa first the pores of membrane are not large enough for phenolphthalein to exit,and NAOH diffuses ihto bag.so, it increase the pH inside the bag and makes it basic. phenolphthalein is a artificial indicator, when it react with the basic medium it gives pink colour.

After an hour both NAOH and phenolphthalein diffuses across the membrane, the membrane pores are large enough for both substances to move across. now, the phenolphthalein move into bag, react witn the highly basic water solution and changes its colour to dark pink.

conclusion:- It is concluded that, phenophthalein give no colour in neutral pH, light pink colour in basic pH, and dark pink colour in highly basic pH.
