Given a population size of 100,000,000 (108) and a mutation rate of 0.001% calculate the number of expected mutants. Under what circumstances will these mutations increase in the population? Decrease? Remain constant?

Population size = 100,000,000

Mutation rate = 0.001%

No. of mutants= Population size * Mutation rate/100

= 100,000,000*0.001/100

= 1000 mutants

A particular mutation may be beneficial, harmful or neutral for a population and hence gets decided whether its frequency will increase, decrease or remain constant over generations. The particular mutation may be favored in a population if it increases their fitness. E.g. sickle cell trait in African population. This trait gets naturally selected in a population where malaria rate is high. Heterozygous allele helps individuals survive better. Mutations which do not affect fitness of the individuals occur at a constant rate since they get weakly selected.
