In this context, the hyperkalemic periodic paralysis is an   inherited disease where the sodium channels are affected. When this disease is present, the sodium channels will be ”more open”, leading to the excessive excitation of the muscle. When these channels are more open than normal, we will observe an excess of potassium in the blood, promoting an excessive muscular contraction. This will finally lead to the paralysis.
