Need help with this physics story problem about momentum and
velocity and collison!
Captain Millicent Bystander...
Captain Millicent Bystander is in her command ship. Her ship is traveling at a speed of 50 m/s in the y direction. Your ship is matching the command ship's speed and bearing. The spacetruck is about three times the mass of a typical earth truck (i.e. you get to pick the type of earth truck and use that to figure out the mass of the spacetruck). Suddenly, a Care Bear Space Craft (it looks like a big cardboard box – reinforced walls – with rainbows painted on the sides, a bear head for a nose cone, and fin's taped on) appears. It is at least the same size as the space truck and probably about 12 the mass. At the moment it appears the Care Bear Space Craft (CBSC) is located at the position (ř = 300m  + 500 m ỹ) with your own ship at the origin. It is traveling at 30 m/s in the x-direction and seems completely oblivious to your squadron. 5 seconds later, Captain Bystander sends the command that you are to pursue the CBSC. 1) What is the change in your momentum for you to pursue the CBSC? (your speed is constant during this). Do this graphically and mathematically 2) Without changing speeds, how long will it take you to reach the CBSC? Use both graphical and mathematical approaches for the solution. 3) You are going to collide with the CBS and grapple (stay connected). What is the velocity of the CBS and spacetruck after the collision? Solve both graphically and mathematically.
