After clearing up the mystery of the barrels, Pete (and Maggie) continued their well-earned vacation. They were tired after their recent harrowing adventure with mercury contamination in Springfield, Ohio. They went fly-fishing near Butte, Montana. This is a world-renowned region for fly-fishing. Pete was standing and fishing in the Clark Fork River, about 20 miles downstream from Butte. The sky was dark over the mountains and Pete thought about the weather report that morning which had indicated a potential for rain, but nothing was going to keep him from fly-fishing. Silver Bow Creek runs through Butte, and enters the Clark Fork River near Anaconda, Montana. Settling ponds built in the 1970's and 1980's for heavy metal contaminants, which run into the Silver Bow Creek from mining in and around Butte, are near Anaconda. Of course this entire area of Montana had been heavily mined for the last 100 years, and much of the contaminated sediment simply washed down through Silver Bow Creek into the Clark Fork River and had settled along the banks. While Pete was fishing, Maggie happily occupied herself with sniffing the bushes and other very interesting things along the bank. Suddenly, Maggie knew something was wrong. Her neck fur bushed up and she ran to where Pete was standing in the river. She started barking and barking. Pete was annoyed and told Maggie to be quiet. After all, Pete was serious about fly-fishing and he didn't want Maggie to scare the fish. Maggie kept barking. Then suddenly, the water Pete was standing in began turning rusty red and cloudy. Pete immediately got out the river. Maggie stopped barking and backed away from the river. Pete did too. A few minutes later, dead and dying fish started floating to the top of the water. Pete ran to get his emergency field kit to collect some samples. p) Later analysis of the samples showed the formula of one of the major components of the rusty red solid to be Fe2O3. Name this compound and the two elements in this compound. What is the formal charge on the Fe atom? q) Other elements determined to be present included arsenic, copper, Mn, Ni and some antimony. Name or provide the symbol for these elements. r) Maggie and Pete detected a foul smelling odor emanating from the river. One of the components of the foul odor was the molecule - H2S. Name this compound. s) One of the ionic species eventually found in the samples contained S What is the name of this polyatomic ion?
