Answer #1

In general, oil and water doesn't mix as hydrocarbons are non polar in nature whereas water is polar in nature. It should be known that polar solvents are only miscible in polar solvent, and non polar with non polar.

Sinclair Oil & Gas, a large energy conglomerate, jointly processes purchased hydrocarbons to generate two intermediate products: ING4, and XGE3. These intermediate products are further processed separately to produce Crude Oil and Natural Gas Liquids (NGL). In June 2019, the following is the monthly data for all the products: Joint costs Crude Oil Natural Gas Liquids Joint Costs (costs of Hydrocarbons and other inputs and processing to split-off point) $1,800 Separable costs of processing 400 tons of ING4 into 150...

Canola oil is less dense than water, so it floats on water, but its index of refraction is 1.47, higher than that of water. When you are adding oil and water to a bottle to make salad dressing, you notice a silvery reflection of light from the boundary between the oil and water. What is the critical angle for light going from the oil into the water?

9-16 When liquids freeze the density changes, which means that the volume changes as well. Water is one of the few liquids that expand when frozen. That is why it is a bad idea to put water in the freezer in a sealed container. Pete decides to test this idea. He sticks an unopened soft drink can in the freezer. Given: In liquid form the soft drink has a density of 1.11 x 103 kg/m3, more dense than water because...

PART IV. MISCIBILITY OF TWO LIQUIDS 1. For the first two liquids in Table IV-B (the solvents in the miscibility tests), use the molecular structures provided in the Introduction to identify each liquid as polar or nonpolar. Put an X in the appropriate column. 2. For the remaining liquids in Table IV-B, determine if they are primarily polar, primarily nonpolar, or both polar and polar based on your observations in Table III-A and based on the polarity of the solvent....

Table 2: 3) The polarity of a molecule is a consequence of its structure and is one of the determinants of the physical and chemical characteristics exhibited by the molecule. If you have ever observed a bottle of oil and vinegar salad dressing before shaking it you have observed one of the consequences of the polarity of molecules, "like dissolves like” and consequently "oil and water don't mix”. (It is important to point out here that vinegar is 95% water...

1st attempt M See Periodic Table Two liquids - one polar, one nonpolar - have the same molar mass. Which one has the higher boiling point? Choose one: A. The polar liquid will have the higher boiling point, since its molecules have dipole-dipole interactions. B. They will have similar boiling points, since the dispersion forces depend upon molar mass. C. The nonpolar liquid will have the higher boiling point, since its molecules are more loosely held together. D. The nonpolar...

with others? Oil and water don't mix Gasoline and water also do not mix. However, gasoline and oil do mix. To understand solubility we must look at two important characteristics: geometry and bond polarity (ionic. nonpolar and polar). From these two characteristics the overall molecular polarity can be determined. The statement "like dissolves like" provides a good basis for understanding solubility. A substance with similar characteristics will mix with another substance with similar characteristics. This can be summarized as polar...
