1 Consider the following: A farmer has noticed that his soybean plants produce more beans in some years than others. He claims to always apply the same amount of fertilizer to the plants but he suspects the difference in crop yield may have something to do with the amount of water the crops receive. The farmer has observed that the soybeans on his farm usually receive between 0 to 0.5 inches of water per day, but he is unsure of the optimal amount of water with which to irrigate. 2 Use the scientific method to address the farmer's needs: a In Data Table 1, state a research question that will directly address the farmer's problem. Conduct online research on "soybean crop irrigation." Record pertinent information and the web sites you used in Data Table 1. 2a. Research question: Is there any relation between crop yield and amount of water crops receive? If yes, what amount of water will give highest yield of soybean?

2b. Soybean requires different amount of water at different stages of development.It varies from as low as 0.05 -0.1 inches/day in germination and seedling stage up to 0.25 -0.35 inches per day in pod development (Source: 1). Water 0.20 to 0.30 inches per day is suitable for majority growth period o soybean. At maturation stage, soybean has lower requirement for water (0.05 inches/day). However, soybean variety, location of farm, rain percentage,soil type are some of the factors which influence the amount of irrigated water (source 1,2). It is essential that soybean plant receive optimum amount of water, the deficit quantity in rain water should be supplemented by irrigation

2c Hypothesis: Soybean yield is unaffected by amount of water the crop receives by irrigation.

3d Design experiment:

1. Take the same variety of soybean which is prominently used in that locality or by farmer for cultivation.
2. Make 16 pots with farm soil, and put seeds
3. Consider 4 growth stages as germination, vegetative growth, flowering and pod filling, maturation. For each stage vary water quantity (inches per day) as 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.
4. Observe results in terms of plant growth, size of leaf, chlorophyll content, days to flowering, number of pods, number of seeds per pod, 100 grain weight
5. Conduct statistical analysis, to find watering condition giving highest yield.
