show all work. say a researcher is interested in testing the effectiveness of a new stress reduction method. She thinks, or predicts based on previous research, that the new method should reduce stress. one randonmly selected person (our subject) is trained in this method and his stress is measured (low values mean low stress). It is known that stress level of people in the general population has a mean of 40 and a standard deviation of 10. the score of the subject who received the method was X= 25.

1) complete the steps of hypothesis testing using the p<.05 significance level (Alpha). show each step) Given: the cutoff critical Z value that cuts off the 5% tail of the distribution =-1.64.

1a) What do you conclude about the anxiety reducing effectiveness of the method?

1b) Did you make a directional or non directional hypothesis? why?

1c) did you do a one-tailed or two-tailed test? why?

Answer #1

Lets put out the hypothesis:

H0: Mu < 40

Ha: Mu >= 40

1. First calc. the te statistic = X-Mu / Sigma = (25-40)/10 = -1.5

Now, since our test statistic is more than -1.64 we have the fact that the test statistic is not in the critical range

Hence, we fail to reject Null hypothesis i.e. Pop, mean = 40

2. We conclude that the anxiety reducing effectiveness method has no significant effect on anxeity, i.e. the anxeity continous to be the same even after this treatment

3. It is a directional / 1 tailed hypothesis

4. I did a 1 tailed test as I wanted to check wether my anxeity is lesser than the pop. anxeity of 40. So, there was only 1 tailed involved.

    General Psychology: Clinicians at a small clinic have been introduced to a new method to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in their clients for veterans. Research indicates that virtual reality (VR) is a highly effective treatment option for patients with PTSD. Currently, the clinic uses only cognitive processing therapy (CPT) with their patients suffering from PTSD. The clinicians would like to find out whether VR therapy has different results from CPT therapy. The measure used by the clinic to measure...

    A hospital in New York commonly conducts stress tests to study the heart muscle after a person has a heart attack. Members of the diagnostic imaging department conducted a quality improvement project with the objective of reducing the turnaround time for stress tests. Turnaround time is defined as the time from when a test is ordered to when the radiologist signs off on the test results. Initially, the mean turnaround time for a stress test was 68 hours. After incorporating...

Thanks in advance :) The z-test 10.1 Assume that a treatment does have an effect and that the treatment effect is being evaluated with a z hypothesis test. Question 1: Suppose we are testing the effectiveness of a new hypnosis treatment at reducing cigarette smoking. 20 smokers are recruited. Half are randomly assigned to a control treatment where they are given some information about the dangers of smoking and sent home. The other half receives the new hypnosis treatment. Four weeks later we measure the number of cigarettes each participant smokes in a week. We want to see if people who receive the treatment smoke a different average...

    Researchers studied the effects of learning about the effectiveness of a new medication (Tal & Wansink, 2014). Some participants heard information about the medication; others heard the same information and saw a graph that depicted the data they had heard about. Thus, the two groups had identical information. Participants rated the effectiveness of the medication on a scale of 1-9, with 9 indicating a higher level of effectiveness. The researchers reported "Participants given graphs expressed greater belief in the claims,...

    The price to earnings ratio (P/E) is an important tool in financial work. A random sample of 14 large U.S. banks (J. P. Morgan, Bank of America, and others) gave the following P/E ratios.† 24 16 22 14 12 13 17 22 15 19 23 13 11 18 The sample mean is x ≈ 17.1. Generally speaking, a low P/E ratio indicates a "value" or bargain stock. Suppose a recent copy of a magazine indicated that the P/E ratio of...
