Question

2) Sir Lancelot rides on a bridge which is supported at one end with a vertical cable that can hold maximum tension of 5.80x103 N. The bridge has mass 200 kg and its center of gravity is at its center. Lancelot, his armor and horse together have a combined mass of 620 kg. Will the cable break before Lancelot reaches the other end of the bridge? If so, how far from castle end of the bridge will the center of gravity of horse plus rider be when the cable breaks? (5pts) 12.0 m

Answer #1

here,

maximum tension , T = 5800 N

mass of bridge , m1 = 200 kg

combined mass of horse and Lancelot ,m2 = 620 kg

let he rides x m before the cable breakes

then equating the moment of force about the pivot

T * 12 - m1 * g * 12/2 - m2 * g * x = 0

5800 * 12 - 200 * 9.81 * 6 - 620 * 9.81 * x = 0

x = 9.5 m

yes the cable breaks when he travels 9.5 m from the castle

    Sir Lost-a-Lot dons his armor and sets out from the castle on his trusty steed in his quest to improve communication between damsels and dragons. Unfortunately his squire lowered the draw bridge too far and finally stopped it 20.0 degree below the horizontal. Lost-a-Lot and his horse stop when their combined center of mass is 1.00 m from the end of the bridge. The uniform bridge is 9.00 m long and has a mass of 1800 kg. The lift cable...

    Sir Lost-a-Lot dons his armor and sets out from the castle on his trusty steed (see figure below). Usually, the drawbridge is lowed to a horizontal position so that the end of the bridge rests on the stone ledge. Unfortunately, Lost-a-Lot's squire didn't lower the drawbridge far enough and stopped it at θ = 20.0° above the horizontal. The knight and his horse stop when their combined center of mass is d = 1.00 m from the end of the...

    A 25-ft crane supported at its lower end by a pin is elevated by a horizontal cable. A 250-Ib load is suspended through the cable. The center of gravity of the crane is 10 ft from the pin, and the crane weighs 200 lb. Hint: You don't have to convert the unit since they cancel out on both sides. 25.
