Which statement describes how neurons use neurotransmitters to communicate with one another?

1) The axons of one neuron connect to the axons of another neuron to relay information through neurotransmitter release.

2) At synapses, axons release neurotransmitters that are recognized by proteins on dendrites.

3) At synapses, dendrites release neurotransmitters that are recognized by proteins on axons.

4) Axons fuse with dendrites to produce a continuous cellular body that allows neurotransmitters to flow from one neuron to another.

Answer #1

2) At synapses, axons release neurotransmitters that are recognized by proteins on dendrites.

The synapses formed by Axon-Dendrite Junction are uni-directional in terms of Neurotransmitter release. The Pre-synaptic neuron connects to the Synapse via its Axon and the Post-synaptic Neuron connects to the Synapse via the Dendrite.
