This pedigree chart is an example of hypercholesterolemia which shows an autosomal dominant type of inheritance.

Here we can see, males and females are equally affected. When one parent is affected (heterozygous) and the other parent is unaffected, approximately 1/2 of the offspring will be affected. This pattern of inheritance does not skip generations. It is present in all the generations, so it is dominant. All diseased individuals in pedigrees are heterozygotes Aa. The disease is much more severe in homozygous individuals (AA). Normal siblings (II-3) of affected individuals have all normal offsprings.
