Julie, who lives in North America, and Jiang, who lives in China, met while cruising the Pacific and, as they got to know

each other, they started comparing their culture. When they got the topic of parenting behavior, what differences between their two cultures would expect them to discover?

One of the most important difference between the two parenting styles would be determined by the culture in which they live. While USA follows individualistic and materialistic culture that values pleasure and individual rights, China follows collective culture which revolves around family, society and sacrifice. This would mean that American parenting style would provide more freedom and autonomy by treating the children as equals while the Chinese parenting style would exert more control over the children by remaining more protective and demanding. While American parents respect the choices of their children, Chinese parents would force their children to achieve the goals they were not able to fulfil. American parents would revolve around their own pleasure thus, the shift in family would be very imminent which would lead them to shift their partners or moving away from their spouses and this would cause more struggle for the children. Chinese parents on the other hand would stick to their children as they would sacrifice their pleasures for their children. American parenting wouldn’t be able to restrict their children from making their own decision and wouldn’t be able to get involved unless the children want them to get involved while the Chinese parents make decision for their children and decide their life course.
