Suddenly put E. coli in 20% NaCl solution and distilled water respectively.
What will happen?

If various nutrients for growth were added to the the above solvent, in which case would the growth of E. coli be supported?

E. coli cells in 20% NaCl solution provides hypertonic environment. Thus, E. coli cells lose water to the environment as there is movement of water out of the cell to an area of higher solute concentration which means to 20% NaCl solution.

But in distilled water that gives hypotonic environment. There is movement of water into the cell cytoplasm and it may cause lysis.

If growth nutrients added to the distilled water that bring the solution to an isotonic state. Then growth of E. coli will be supported.

But, growth of E. coli will not supported if growth nutrients added to 20% NaCl solution as the cells may be halophilic which means may adapted to highly saline conditions for their survival in such an environment.
