According Edward Hall there is a direct correlation between social standings and physical distances between people. He divided distances in zones-

1. Public distance zone- in it distance should be of approx 12 feet. It is used by public speakers or public influencers or presenters who are presenting to the larger audience.

2. Social distancing zone- in it distance is 1.5-3 meters or 5-10 feet. It is used when the people do not know each other. For example while interacting shopkeepers, bank staff and service providers.

3. Personal distance zone- in it distance is from 60 cm to 1.5 meters or 2-5 feet. This space is used for friends and family. When both the parties know each other very well and they are comfortable in talking with each other.

4. Intimate distance zone- in it distance is from 60 cm to direct contact or 2 feet. This space is for partners and siblings. They are most trusted and loved ones.

5. Intimate crowd- it is a very close distance and we do not feel comfortable in these situations. In this situation we subconsciously choose to ignore them as humans. These situations we can see in crowded buses or full elevator.

In this given case Josh is coming in the personal distance zone which is reserved for family and friends. Josh is a trainer so he should come in social distancing zone (1.5 cm to 3 cm). That’s why most of trainees do not feel comfortable with the distance of trainer and trainee. Josh is violating Edward Hill’s interaction zones by coming in personal distancing zone instead of coming in social distancing zone. Josh’s distance with trainees is from 12 to 14 feet or 1 inch to 2 inch.
