Question 18: Triglycerides are made of a glycerol with each carbon attached to one fatty acid (total 3 fatty acids + 1 glycerol).

1. Adipose triacylglyerol lipase (ATGL) cleaves fatty acid from the 1st carbon producing a free fatty acid (FFA) and 2,3-diacyl glycerol (DAG).

2. Hormone-sensitive lipase (HSL) acts on DAG at 3rd carbon to form a FFA and 2-monoacyl glycerol (MAG).

3. Monoacyl glycerol lipase (MGL) acts on MAG to form a FFA and glycerol.

Tracylglycerol ATAL Fatty acid Diacylglycerol HSL Fatty acid Mono acylglycerol MAL L Falty aud Glycerol

These FFAs undergo β-oxidation to generate acetyl-CoA which produce energy via the Krebs cycle and electron transport chain (ETC).

Glycerol enters glycolysis as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate.
