The units for a two dimensional measurement gets squared because while measuring in 2-D we measure across 2 axes that is length and breadth which gives us area of the 2-D figure. Basic unit of area is a 1*1 unit square and the area of the 2-D figure is equal to number of these 1*1 unit squares present in the figure. So, the unit of area is 1*1 unit square(unit^2).

The unit for a three dimensional measurement gets cubed because while measuring in 3-D we measure across 3 axes that is length, breadth and height which gives us volume of the 3-D figure. Basic unit of volume is a 1*1*1 unit cube and the volume of the 3-D figure is equal to number of these 1*1*1 unit cubes present in the figure. So, the unit of volume is 1*1*1 unit cube (unit^3).
