Question

easoning Which form of magnesium is most appropriate for measuring the property identified in question 5? Pre-Experiment Questions Part Two Physical chemistry is a quantitative science in which data is modeled. The model is often (but not always) a known equation based on a definition or concept. Modeling is accomplished by graphing the data and fitting the equation using least squares analysis. The slope and intercept of the fitted line are related to modeling parameters. The rate law equation for the magnesium-hydrochloric acid reaction is dP dt Mg dP where di is the change in hydrogen pressure with respect to time, k is the rate constant, SMg is the surface area of magnesium, a is the rate order in respect to the surface area of magnesium, [H] is the concentration of the hydrogen ion, h is the rate constant in respect to the concentration of hydrogen ion Define all the parameters in this equation What is varied to determine the order of the reaction with respect to the magnesium? 2 What is varied to determine the order of the reaction with respect to hydrogen ion? What is not varied in each determination? What parameters in this equation are constants? ろ Take the logarithm of both sides of the rate law equation. Show how a and b can be determined by a linear least squares fit of rate versus the quantities identified in question 7. Identify the independent variable(s), the dependent variable(s), the slope and the intercept. . How many data points are needed to confirm a linear relationship for the experimental results? Hello, i need help in question 3 and 4 please.. It's for physical chem lab .

Thanks in advance!

Answer #1

for an equation of first order:

ln(A) = ln(A0) - kt

If we make a trendline/fit for this

let

y-axis = ln(A)

y-intercept (b) = ln(A0)

x-axis (t) = time

slope (a) = -k

independent --> time, ALWAYS....

dependent --> concentration or, natural log of concentration ln(A), the y-axis

Q4.

at least 3, since this is logarithmic... 2 points will not do since this may be ony an appoximation... much better to do a larger set of numbers but 3 will do

Scientists like to use data to build physical models (or mathematical models to predict how data will look). Linear trends are easiest to work with; so we often look for ways to identify linear trends in a data set. Nuclear reactions all follow first order kinetics meaning the rate of a nuclear reaction is given...
