Answer #1

Solution:

Given:

p = 0.07

n = 1000

x = Number of a's in sample of 1000 letters = 84

Thus sample proportion of a's is:

84 10000.084

Level of significance = g= 0,05

Hypothesis:

Ho: p=0.07

H:p +0.07

We have to find z test statistic:

-P px(1-P)

2 = 0.084 -0.07 0.07x(1-0.07) 1000

0.014 0.07x0.93 1000

| 0.014 二、0.0000651

0.014 0.00806846

2=31.74

Find critical values:

use level of significance = g= 0,05

Since this is two tailed, we find : Area = a/2 = 0.05/2 = 0.025

Look in z table for area = 0.0250 or its closest area and find z value

– -3.4 -3.3 -3.2 -3.1 -3.0 -2.9 -2.8 -2.7 -2.6 -2.5 -2.4 .00 .0003 .0005 .0007 .0010 .0013 .0019 .0026 .0035 .0047 .0062 .008

Area 0.0250 corresponds to -1.9 and 0.06

thus z critical value = -1.96

Since this is two tailed test, we have two z critical values: ( -1.96 , 1.96)

Decision Rule:
Reject null hypothesis ,if z  test statistic value < z critical value=-1.96 or z  test statistic value > z critical value= 1.96 , otherwise we fail to reject H0.

Since z test statistic value = z = 1.74 is neither less -1.96 , not greater than 1.96, we failed to reject H0.

Conclusion:

At 0.05 level of significance , we do not have sufficient evidence to conclude that the proportion of a's has changed in modern times.
