Answer #1

Steam distillation is a type of separting process where the substances are steam volatie and immiscible with water.

It is used to purify the liquids which are not very volatile. It separate=s the liquids having a temperature difference of >70oC.

The boiling point of water is 100 oC

boiling point of methanol is 64.7 oC

boiling point of p-dichlorobenzene is 174 oC

boiling point of ethylene glycol is 197.3 oC

(a) for methanol and water the temperature difference is < 70 oC.

Therefore, the steam distillation is not used for this mixture.

so the correct option is Flase.

(b)

for p-dichlorobenzene and water the temperature difference is > 70 oC.

Therefore, the steam distillation is used for this mixture.

so the correct option is true.

(c)

for ethylene glycol and water the temperature difference is > 70 oC.

Therefore, the steam distillation is used for this mixture.

so the correct option is true.
