Lungs

The first change or the synapomorphy which led the metazoans to leave aqueous environment and come into the land area is the development of the lungs. Generally the aquatic organisms have gills which enable them to breathe in oxygen and breathe out and through the gills it takes in oxygen that is dissolved in water. The lungs enable metazoans to breathe in oxygen and breathe out C02 from the atmosphere and hence this is the primary change that takes place in the organism.
