Answer #1

(A) Ideal efficiency of the heat pump,

The ideal efficiency is the carnot efficiency and it is given by ,

\eta =1-\frac{T_{L}}{T_{H}}= 1-\frac{(273+20)}{(273+500)}

\eta =0.621 = 62.1 %

(B)Using the ideal efficiency , heat supplied to molten salt is given by ,

\eta =\frac{W_{in}}{Q_{H}}

0.621 =\frac{200}{Q_{H}}

Q_{H}=322 MJ

(C) The work output for 50% efficiency is,

\eta =\frac{W_{in}}{Q_{H}}

0.5 =\frac{W_{in}}{322}

W_{in}=161 MJ

    04: An Ocean Thermal Energy Converter (OTEC) pumps 200 m/s through a heat exchanger in which the temperature (expressed in Kelvins) drops by 1 %. All the heat extracted is delivered to the ammonia boiler. The ammonia temperature, THT, at the turbine inlet is equal to the mea temperature of the water in the warm water heat exchanger minus 1 K. The temperature, Tcr, of the ammonia leaving the turbine is kept at 10°C by the cooling effect of 250...
