Answer #1

2. The growth pattern of bacterium Y will be dependent on whether it is mesophile, psychrophile or psychrotolerant.

Condition 1 : Bacterium Y is a mesophile. The number of cells in a population will decrease.  At lower temperatures than the optimal temperatures, molecules move slower, enzymes cannot mediate in chemical reactions, and eventually the viscosity of the cell interior decreases the cell activity.

Condition 2 : Bacterium Y is a psychrohile. The number of cells in a population will increase. Psychrophilic organisms grow best at lower temperatures (-100C to +100C)

Condition 3 : Bacterium Y is a psychrotolerant. The number of cells in a population will remain same. Psychrotrophic or psychrotolerant bacteria are mesophilic organsims which are able to survive but not grow at lower temperature than minimum.

Each species of microbe has its own upper and lower limiting value of temperature for growth which is unique to that microbe.

3. Psychrophilic bacteria - Arthrobacter flavus, Psychrobacter faecalis

4. The answer given by student is correct.

    10. Write a one-page summary of the attached paper? INTRODUCTION Many problems can develop in activated sludge operation that adversely affect effluent quality with origins in the engineering, hydraulic and microbiological components of the process. The real "heart" of the activated sludge system is the development and maintenance of a mixed microbial culture (activated sludge) that treats wastewater and which can be managed. One definition of a wastewater treatment plant operator is a "bug farmer", one who controls the aeration...
