Smelling one strong odor for a constant and regular amount of time, may lead your receptors to adopt or get used to the smell and not react as drastically as it did the first time. What are the specific changes that make this to happen? For example increasing the amount of neurotransmitter (NT) by upregulating the enzyme that makes the NT would look the same physiologically but be genetically different (and pharmacologically different) than down regulating the enzyme that degrades the NT.
