The position of business office manager at Memorial Hospital has been a hot seat, changing incumbents frequently. When the position was vacated last may the four senior employees in the department were interviewed. All were told that because they were at the top of the pay grade and compensation structure for the new supervisors had “not caught up with that of other jobs,” this promotion would not involve a pay increase. As a result, all four decided not to pursue the position any further. Additionally, all four were given the impression that they were not fully qualified anyway but that they might be considered for a supervision position at a later date.

The following month a new business office manager was hired from the outside, and the four senior employees were instructed to “show the new boss all you know.” Over the following several months the finance director (the business office manager’s supervisor) told all four employees that they had “come along very well” and would be considered for a manager’s position should one become available.

In October, the recently hired business office manager resigned. However, none of the four senior employees got the job; the process described above was repeated, and again a new manager was hired from the outside.

Answer #1

Internal promotions which means promoting someone from within the company rather than hiring them from outside the company. The company must make it their policy to encourage their employees and promote them instead of going for external recruitment. It is very beneficial to have the employees fill the higher positions because they know the situation of the company and can handle their team accordingly. They can take decisions faster and can adapt to their responsibilities quickly.  For internal promotions, the criteria to be used to select employees can be set.  Employees who are seniors and have enough experience to deal with the post must be selected Employees with good communication skills and who can adapt to various market situations must be given preference.  Employees who have good leadership skills and who can lead their team through issues and make them successful must be preferred.

These criteria would help the management in selecting the right person among their employees for the position. In the given scenario the company went for external hiring because they need not pay high salaries to employees who are new recruits. But if a person among these four are selected for the position based on their skills and leadership capabilities it would be much efficient because they are familiar with the company and it's procedures and can easily adjust to the job .
