Question 4 Outline the reasons for applying the vacuum concept in vacuum distillation process.

Vacuum distillation means operating distillation column below atmospheric pressure. That means as you lower down the pressure you reduce the boiling point of component.This technique is used when the boiling point of the desired compound is difficult to achieve or will cause the compound to decompose.

Vacuum distillation used under following cases:-

1) when substance is thermally degradable.

2) it reduces undesirable side reaction if take place.

3)it increases product recovery when dealing with maximum temperature constraints.
