Answer #1

Question 4

  • As the RBCs are placed in in hypotonic solution there would not be any water movement from the cell. Hence, the cells will not shrink and the option A is wrong.
  • 100 millimoles (mM) of cacl2 is an hypotonic solution so there will be net movement of water. Hence the option C is wrong.
  • The isotonic concentration for the RBCs is around 154 mM at this concentration the cells will retain their normal shape. If the concentration of the solution reduces or increases beyond 154 mM the solution becomes hypotonic and hypertonic respectively. In our case, the solution concentration is 100 mM, which is hypotonic. At hypotonic concentration, the solute concentration inside the cell is greater than the outside. In order to achieve equilibrium water molecule move from the solution to inside the cell as a result the RBCs will swell and burst.

Hence the correct answer is option B. The RBCs would swell and burst
