Answer #1

Please note ^nC_r = \frac{n!}{(n-r)! * r!}

P(Event) = Number of favorable outcomes/Total Number of outcomes

Number of accidents that involved pedestrians who were not intoxicated = 78 + 602 = 680

Favorable Outcomes = Choosing 2 out of 680 accidents = 680C2 = 680 * 679 / 2 = 230860

Total Outcomes = Choosing 2 out of the total 990 accidents = 990C2 = 990 * 989 / 2 = 4895555

Therefore the required probability = 230860 / 4895555 = 0.0472
