Answer #1

Solution:

Since sample size n is less than 30 we use a t-test for determining the significance.

t = \frac{X-\mu}{\frac{\sigma}{\sqrt{n}}}

t = \frac{2.94-3}{\frac{0.1}{\sqrt{15}}}

t = -2.3238t = 2.3238

We refer to the t table values,

Hence, the critical value of reference for a degree of freedom of 14 and a significance level of 0.05 is 1.771

Since the t-statistic is more than the critical value of reference we reject the null hypothesis.

The result of the sample is hence significant for a significance level of 0.05.

    The quality control division of a factory that manufactures batteries suspects defects in the production of a model of mobile phone battery which results in a lower life for the product. Until now, the time duration in phone conversation for the battery followed a normal distribution with a mean of 300 minutes. However, in an inspection of the last batch produced before sending it to market, it was found that the average time spent in conversation was 290 minutes in...

    An electronic device factory is studying the length of life of the electronic components they produced. The manager selects two assembly lines and takes all samples on those two lines. He got a sample of 500 electronic components and records the length of life in the life test. From the sample he found the average length of life was 200,000 hours and that the standard deviation was 1,000 hours. He wants to find the confidence interval for the average length...

    A piston in a particular 12-cylinder diesel engine is manufactured to have diameter 13 mm. Every half-hour, 10 finished pistons are selected and carefully measured. If there is any evidence that the mean diameter is different from 13 mm, the manufacturing process must be stopped for the machine to be inspected. The quality control inspector uses a significance level of 0.05 and found the sample to have a mean of 12.8 mm and a standard deviation of 0.06 mm. A)...

    The thickness (in millimeters) of the coating applied to disk drives is one characteristic that determines the usefulness of the product. When no unusual circumstances are present, the thickness (x) has a normal distribution with a mean of 3 mm and a standard deviation of 0.05 mm. Suppose that the process will be monitored by selecting a random sample of 16 drives from each shift's production and determining x, the mean coating thickness for the sample. In a destructive test of product quality, a briefcase manufacturer places each of a simple random sample of the day’s production in a viselike device and measures how many pounds it takes to crush the case. From past experience, the standard deviation has been found to be 21.5pounds. For 35 cases randomly selected from today’s production, the average breaking strength was 341.0 pounds. The lower confidence limit of 99% confidence interval for the mean breaking strength of the briefcases produced...
